“We are going to Seuol to expose Future Forests to the international research community concerned with forests," said Annika Nordin, Director of the Future Forests research programme. Tuesday 24 August Future Forests will host a side event, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in room 410 on the 4th floor of the COEX congress venue in downtown Seoul. There, Professor Nordin will give congress delegates an overview of the Future Forests programme and the many trade-offs that have to be made when it comes to using and managing forests.
In addition, Future Forests´ researchers will outline the programme´s work to enhance methods to protect soil and water in boreal forests, and suggest that there are lessons to be learnt from studying conflicts that arise as a result of diverging views among stakeholders on how best to manage and to use forests.
From the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Dean Tomas Lundmark will discuss Swedish approaches to managing forests in an international context, while Lisa Sennerby-Forsse, SLU Vice Chancellor, will get to the heart of challenges in future land use.
Participation in congress sessions
During the rest of the congress, researchers from Future Forests are lined up to participate in congress sessions on biodiversity in forests, on issues of forests and climate change, and on the media and political discourse on forests in a historical perspective.
Throughout the congress, delegates and media professionals will find representatives from Future Forests and from SLU in booth B15 in the Trade & Exhibition area of the congress venue. They are there to discuss their work and that of the programme.
Prof. Nordin said the congress would be a good place to start expanding Future Forests´ international contact network, as well as an opportunity to meet scientists from other research organisations interested in joining the programme.
“Since we are a young programme this will be an opportunity to create such contacts at an early stage," Prof. Nordin concluded.
