Future Forests is an interdisciplinary research programme on the multiple uses of Swedish forests. Our vision is to produce knowledge for a sustainable use of forests in a future influenced by climate change and economic globalization. The demands on forest resources are increasing as a result of climate change, globalized trade with forest products, and a growing market for bioenergy. The challenge is to make forests meet multiple needs, which could include an intensified production while at the same time safe-guarding other ecosystem services, such as water quality, biodiversity and recreational values.
Our mission
Through interdisciplinary science in close collaboration with practitioners from different sectors of society, Future Forests aims to contribute to reconciling the supply and demand of knowledge between scientists and decision makers. Knowledge produced by Future Forests should expand alternatives and clarify the consequences of choice.
The program
Future Forests is hosted by The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The research program is a joint initiative between SLU, Umeå University and the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden (Skogforsk). The program is financed by Mistra (the Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research), the Swedish forestry industry and the universities involved.
